Volum at San Sebastián: Bringing Volumetric Video to the Heart of Cinema

For many technologists and innovators, the journey from laboratory research to industry showcase is a defining milestone. A few years ago, our team was hard at work developing core volumetric technologies at the i2CAT Research Centre. This week, that journey reached a prestigious new stage: pitching Volum Technologies at the Festival de San Sebastián (Donostia Zinemaldia).

Standing on stage representing Volum Technologies felt extraordinary. In just six minutes, we had the opportunity to share years of dedicated team effort and explain what real-time volumetric video can bring to the future of cinema and audiovisual production.

Rethinking cinematic perspective

At its core, Volum's technology starts with a simple yet powerful premise: capturing people and performances in true 3D so they can be viewed and experienced from any perspective, breaking completely free from the constraints of a fixed camera frame.

Bringing that capability directly into the hands of filmmakers, directors, and creators is the driving force behind everything we build. Cinema has always been about framing human emotion and storytelling; volumetric video takes that art form into the spatial era by making performances fully explorable.

Connecting with the audiovisual community

Presenting at Zinemaldia offered a unique opportunity to step outside the traditional tech conference circuit and engage directly with storytellers who approach their craft from diverse artistic backgrounds.

The conversations in San Sebastián highlighted a growing appetite within the film industry for tools that expand creative boundaries without sacrificing emotional authenticity. From virtual production stages to interactive narratives, filmmakers are eager to explore how volumetric capture can unlock new dimensions of performance.

Looking ahead

Bringing a glimpse of our world to Zinemaldia left our team inspired, energized, and with plenty of new ideas to ponder as we continue pushing the boundaries of spatial storytelling.

A sincere thank you to the festival organizers for making us feel so welcome, to everyone who took the time to connect and converse with us, and above all, to our entire team at Volum for the years of rigorous work behind those six minutes on stage.
