Educating the Next Generation of XR Innovators: Volum at the EURASIP International Summer School

As extended reality (XR) rapidly transitions from advanced research into widespread industrial deployment, educating and empowering the next generation of technologists is more critical than ever.

Volum Technologies was proud to co-organize and actively participate in this year's EURASIP International Summer School on eXtended Reality Technology and eXperience, held at the Universidad de Zaragoza and expertly directed by Sandra Malpica Mallo. Now in its fourth consecutive year, the summer school serves as a premier gathering for young researchers, PhD students, and industry leaders to explore the cutting edge of immersive tech.

Introducing Volum Technologies: spun out from i2CAT

This ecosystem event provided the ideal platform to officially introduce Volum Technologies — our newly established spin-off from the i2CAT Research Centre.

During the program, the team shared Volum's overarching vision: leveraging next-generation volumetric video and real-time interaction to positively transform both the XR sector and society at large. Presenters walked attendees through our latest research outcomes and real-world use cases stemming from active Research & Innovation frameworks, including the PRESENCE-xr EU Project and HEAT.

Hands-on integration: the Unity workshop

Theory and vision are essential, but practical execution drives the industry forward. To bridge the gap, the Volum team — led by Marc Martos Cabré, Marc Gálvez, and Álvaro Egea Benavente — hosted an interactive, hands-on workshop session.

Students, researchers, and professional attendees had the unique opportunity to get under the hood of volumetric video, learning how to easily integrate Volum's capture and streaming technology into their own Unity-based XR projects.

The future of immersive services

The EURASIP Summer School focuses on providing an objective, in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art research as advanced devices and 5G/6G communications become ubiquitous.

As discussed throughout the event, virtual, augmented, and extended reality services are poised to fundamentally reshape how people communicate, work, and play:

  • True remote presence — Attending live concerts or having dinner with a friend living on the other side of the world with the exact same feeling of co-location.
  • Advanced medical & industrial training — Learning complex surgical procedures or engineering repairs using interactive digital representations of real patients or machinery.

However, realizing this future requires navigating immense technical complexity, blending computer vision, high-speed networking, spatial audio, and real-time mesh rendering into a seamless product stack.

Looking ahead

Events like the EURASIP Summer School offer a vital space for young researchers to interact directly with scientific peers, present their work, and engage with leaders in the field.

Volum Technologies extends a massive thank you to Sandra Malpica Mallo, the organizers, and everyone who made this year's edition an unforgettable success. We are already looking forward to the 2027 edition!
