Connectivity is evolving beyond simple data transmission; it is shifting toward the transmission of human presence itself.
At this year's EuCNC & 6G Summit 2026 in Málaga, Volum Technologies joined forces with the i2CAT Research Centre — one of the event's key sponsors and a leading European institution driving the future of telecommunications — to demonstrate what is next for real-time collaboration.
Live holographic communication: connecting Málaga and Barcelona
The highlight of Volum's presence at the summit was a live, end-to-end holographic communication demonstration connecting Málaga and Barcelona in real time.
Developed and integrated by Volum Technologies as part of the PRESENCE-xr EU Project, the demonstration showcased how advanced 5G and 6G networking infrastructures can power true volumetric telepresence. Rather than relying on flat screens or compressed 2D video feeds, participants across geographically distributed locations interacted naturally as life-sized, photorealistic holograms.
By combining sub-300ms latency pipelines with high-speed next-gen networks, the experience recreated a genuine sense of spatial co-location and shared physical presence.
The future of connected collaboration
Events like the EuCNC & 6G Summit bring together top researchers, telecom operators, and industry leaders shaping the future digital infrastructure of Europe. Volum's live demo underscored several critical takeaways for the future of connectivity:
- Beyond video conferencing — Moving past traditional 2D video calls to enable immersive, spatial interactions that capture subtle body language, eye contact, and natural conversational flow.
- Network-ready immersive tech — Proving that high-fidelity volumetric video streaming is fully compatible with modern and emerging 5G/6G network architectures.
- Accelerating adoption — Demonstrating that European collaborative research is successfully bridging the gap between advanced lab prototypes and practical, deployable communication tools.
Looking ahead
Volum Technologies extends its sincere thanks to the team at i2CAT for the opportunity to exhibit at their booth and share this vision with the broader European tech community.
As next-generation networks continue to roll out, the infrastructure for true spatial computing is falling into place. The future of communication is immersive, interactive, and holographic.
